Summary

[Virtual tour] Planning a summer day trip? Greetings from Asbury Park! Last year, Asbury Park's beach was named as one of the best in the country by Travel + Leisure. James Russiello tours the history of this beachfront New Jersey city in two parts. In this second part, learn about the newly free city's development after the three Methodist settlements of Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, and Bradley Beach went their separate ways. Asbury Park continued developing attractive residential neighborhoods, stunning theaters, and light industry catering to the tourist season. Under a newly elected dynamic mayor, the city shook off its morality as it competed with Atlantic City as a convention destination before the Great Depression, heavy storms, and the Interstate system took their toll. Throughout the mid to late 20th century, Asbury Park struggled to retain its existing heritage and revitalize it. Through various celebrities and revivals, the city has remade itself with music, immigration, restoration, and of course the summer vacation season.
