Summary
This architecture-focused walking tour will take you through the pristine 19th and early-20th century streetscape of America's first suburb: Brooklyn Heights. We will proceed down the southward path of the neighborhood's 19th century evolution from sleepy farming village to speculative suburban development, spurred first by ferry and then by bridge. We will explore how the Heights's present-day architecture reveals shifting trends in urban living in the 20th century, and how the mid-century preservation movement froze the neighborhood in time and created a blueprint for neighborhood-wide preservation in New York. Expect to see Revolutionary War sites, some of the City's first luxury apartment buildings, and many brownstones. Comfortable walking shoes and water recommended.
