Summary

[Virtual tour] When Olmsted and Vaux laid out Prospect Park and Eastern Parkway in the 1860s, they thought the elegant boulevard would soon be lined with large mansions from the park to Nostrand Avenue. But that never happened. The land remained empty for years. It wasn’t until the first decades of the 20th century that development on the northern side of Eastern Parkway and around Grand Army Plaza started to take place. Instead of mansions, developers built grand elevator apartment buildings that faced the Brooklyn Museum, the Botanic Gardens and later, the Central Library. What took so long? Who were the developers, architects and tenants? What is the history of this area now known as the Eastern Parkway Apartment District? Join Suzanne Spellen in a virtual tour exploring this unique part of Brooklyn.
