Summary

[Virtual tour] The rugged coastal region of Maine is fascinating for anybody, but to late 19th and 20th century artists it offered a perfect summer location for art schools, affordable and removed from the city pressures, a place to explore a timeless, truly American landscape, but also experiment with various degrees of abstraction. Early on, Ogunquit and Mohegan Island became the most important art communities, with leading painters like Robert Henri, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, and John Marin, capturing the coast as well as the surrounding mountains. The pioneering art dealer Edith Halpert also sojourned here, forging important connections with visiting artists and exploring the local vernacular art as an additional source of inspiration, for the artists as well as her most important client, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Gaston Lachaise, and Marsden Hartley were at home in Maine and following WWII, Alex Katz, Fairfield Porter and Lois Dodd and others created their artist community in ‘Slab City’, in resistance to the dominating trend of abstraction. Join Sylvia Laudien Meo for this virtual visit to the Pine Tree State.
