Admission
- Free
Summary
Manhattan squeezes down to 5 blocks in width north of 155th Street. The area from 155th to 168th Street is known by locals as Jumel Heights -- home to the Morris-Jumel Mansion, Trinity Cemetery, the Church of the Intercession (one of only three Manhattan churches constructed from local Manhattan Schist), a strong Dominican and African-American community, and beautiful church architecture dating back to the 1800s when the area was a country retreat for city (read: below Canal Street) businesspeople. We'll walk from Trinity Cemetery to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to Highbridge Park and the beautiful Jumel Terrace Historic District. We'll see ethnic restaurants, historic churches, and beautifully restored brownstones. You may even discover a brownstone in need of restoration that you can get for a bargain!
