Summary

The Brooklyn Bridge is more than a feat of engineering. It is Hegelian philosophy rendered in steel and stone, a cultural text saturated with Gilded Age ambition, and an enduring muse to America's greatest artists.

This tour uncovers the fraught history and rich afterlife of one of New York's greatest treasures — from the human drama of its construction to its transformation into an icon.

We will begin at City Hall Park, move to the promenade's eastern entrance on Frankfort street, and conclude at Front Street Pizza. Attendees should bring a camera and comfortable shoes. I will display color slides and texts by artists inspired by the Bridge, such as Hart Crane and Georgia O'Keefe (attendees are encouraged to recite the poems!).

Attendees will develop a deeper appreciation of the Bridge's architectural and cultural significance.
