Summary
Anti-immigrant “Know Nothings” burned down a small Catholic Church on Sheriff Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on November 5th, 1831. The former mayor of New York, Mayor Stephen Allen, came to the rescue and sold Mount Pitt to the church to rebuild the community. Come and explore Mount Pitt, the highest point on the longest stretch of East West road in Manhattan. Home to orphans, immigrants, and run-away slaves, and scene of draft riots and the rebirth of the Lower East Side.
