Summary

With the extension of the subway north of 42nd Street to 125th Street in 1918, Lexington Avenue became an important commercial corridor in midtown. Major Art Deco works, such as the Shelton Towers and the General Electric Building will be discussed, as well as the once-reviled Summit Hotel (now a New York City Landmark), designed by Morris Lapidus. Our tour concludes at St. Peter's Church, part of the Citicorp Center complex, where we will meet pastor Jared Stahler and visit the soaring 1977 interior by the celebrated Italian designers Massimo and Lella Vignelli, as well as the Erol Becker Chapel, an intimate sculptural environment by Louise Nevelson.
