Summary

This month we look at an area that has already gone through zoning changes to see what may have transpired. East New York sits at a major transportation hub at Broadway Junction, where many elevated subway lines seem to converge in mid-air in surrealistic fantasy. Reality has been much harsher and the neighborhood has been a symbol of urban blight over the last 40 years. However, in the last 25 years, an almost miraculous and innovative housing program has helped stabilize the area to such an extent that the potential for transit-oriented development is now much more possible. Building on these opportunities, the city of New York rezoned a significant portion of East New York in April 2016. Development has been slow but there have been critical changes in its infrastructure, as part of the rezoning package. [However, fears of displacement are significant and a recent spike in home foreclosures in the area has only added to this. Will the City and State make the necessary investment in the area to further its progress? Can continued growth be balanced with the needs of the neighborhood's poorest residents?] Join guide Laurence Frommer for an examination of one of the foremost examples of urban planning's failures and triumphs.
