Summary

Each November 11th, we celebrate Veteran's Day. The holiday actually began as Armistice Day, a celebration and commemoration of the end of World War I, on November 11th, 1918, and of the bravery and sacrifice of American soldiers in that war. Though more than a century has passed since the Armistice, remnants and reminders of the First Word War are scattered throughout the city. On this virtual tour, we will consider the origins of Armistice Day, and discuss the war's impact on New York City, as we discover local links to World War I, including memorials, armories, forts, cultural institutions, and spy dens.
