Summary

The L train's fascinating history traces back to a steam railroad that began operating in 1865. Its route was incorporated into the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company’s elevated service in 1906, and later evolved as part of the subway expansion effort that began in 1913. Also known as the Fourteenth St – Canarsie local, the line travels from 8th Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan to Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie, Brooklyn. The story of the line's construction is not without controversies, but its development was propelled forward by enterprising individuals.

Join New York Transit Museum's Educator and Experience Facilitator Kate Lanceley for a virtual exploration of the complex history of the L train through archival images, engaging stories, and a look at how neighborhoods have changed along the route. Join us on Zoom with time for Q&A.
