Summary

Accessible, clean, and safe public bathrooms are a necessity in a city as large, dense, and diverse as New York. Public bathrooms are a basic need, a human right, a public health concern, and a necessary piece of urban infrastructure. There are about 1,100 public bathrooms in NYC for a city of 8.8 million and an annual $66 million visitors (pre-pandemic).
We will explore 6 different public bathroom typology in the midtown area:
1. POPS Restroom – 120 Park Avenue
2. BID bathroom – Bryant Park Bathroom
3. Privately funded MTA bathroom - Times Square subway bathroom
4. Penn Station - one of the only 24/7 public bathroom
5. Olivieri drop-in center – West 30th Street
6. Automated Public Toilet – Madison Square Park
