[In-person tour] Walk through the West End-Collegiate Historic District and marvel at some of the speculatively built handsome rowhouses, designed by the immensely talented Clarence True, Lamb & Rich, and C.P.H. Gilbert, all in that quintessential blend of French, Italian, and Flemish Renaissance revival styles for which the last decade plus of the 19th century was known. Named for the nearby West End Collegiate Church at 77th and West End Avenue, explore the West End-Collegiate Historic District and its extensions with preservationist and architectural historian James Russiello to see these rowhouses and the layers of development of succeeding apartment buildings built for the affluent as living styles evolved. Learn about how key developers’ and strong personalities, along with the Citizens' West Side Improvement Association, and a very early “preservation” group, and modern adaptive reuse projects built and shaped this section of the Upper West Side for the upwardly mobile.
