Description

Street signs for Stuyvesant and MacDonough StreetsIn 2013 the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated an expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, surrounding the original historic district, which was designated in 1971. Join tour guides Suzanne Spellen, writer and architectural historian, aka columnist "Montrose Morris" on Brownstoner.com, and Morgan Munsey, architect, historian, and expert on the architecture of Bedford Stuyvesant to explore the architectural and cultural highlights of both districts, rich with fine residential, civic and sacred architecture by some of Brooklyn's most important architects and developers. This part of the neighborhood is also home to some Brooklyn's most important black churches, and was also called home by a wealth of 19th and 20th century people, both black and white, who made great contributions to the culture and civic life of this city, and the country beyond. They include composer Eubie Blake, artist Orlando Cheeks, architects Richard Thomas Shorte and Henry Hill, and Generals William Chauncey Kibbe and Charles MacLeer. There are many stories waiting to be told here in the Heights. (Note: Because of an added surprise, this tour will last for 2 and a half hours.) Cost: $30 / $20 Members.
