Summary

Russell Sage was a classic American success story. He came from humble beginnings and rose to the heights of financial success and power during the late 19th century in the age of the railroad Robber Barons and Wall Street tycoons. Sage and his cohorts George Vanderbilt, Jay Gould and others wielded tremendous power, and controlled huge personal fortunes, but were both feared and mocked by the press and social reformers. Russell Sage married twice, once for love and once for expediency. His second wife, Olivia Slocum Sage was a highly educated and intelligent woman who managed his fortune as he declined in his final years. When he died in 1906, he left everything to her, making her the wealthiest woman in America. She spent the rest of her life giving the fortune away. It was said their marriage was a cold and distant relationship. But was it? Or is that just part of the myth? This story of two fascinating people is presented by Suzanne Spellen, an architectural historian and writer.
