Summary
[Virtual tour] During the past 15 years, since the first section of the High Line Park opened, West Chelsea, between the Meatpacking District and Hudson Yards, has developed into one of the most significant architectural neighborhoods worldwide. Following the conversion of the old freight train tracks to a stellar urban park, as well as the growing presence of international art galleries, revised zoning laws allowed for new residential and commercial development. Many of these new architectural commissions went to so-called ‘starchitects’ like Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Jean Nouvel or Zaha Hadid and more, who created pioneering new structures or remodeled existing ones, carefully contextualizing as well as introducing their own signature styles. Art historian Sylvia Laudine-Meo leads an exploration of this landscape.
