Landmark East Harlem has proposed an East-Central Harlem historic district for listing on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Essentially a Victorian-era residential community, its boundaries are Park Avenue to Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Boulevard, 125th to 132nd Streets. It encompasses no fewer than 32 designated New York City landmarks! The earliest buildings date to the time when Harlem was a rural village not yet annexed to the City of New York; the latest are ultramodern townhouses. Other featured sites include rowhouses in the Queen Anne, Neo-Grec and Victorian Gothic styles and former church buildings that have been given new purposes.
