Summary
The elevated trains (els for short) were the precursors to New York's subway system. Starting with 1868's Ninth Avenue El, these trains shaped Manhattan and defined neighborhoods. This walking tour will focus on downtown Manhattan, from West to East Village, and tell the story of the elevated trains through art by John French Sloan, Francis Criss, and Alice Neel, and historic artifacts and evidence still present today.
