Summary

The Civic Center is the heart of New York City's government, law, and justice system. But how did it all come to be? In a walk around City Hall Park and the surrounding area, we will go back to the tumultuous century that birthed the magnificent public buildings of today, and dive into the roots of corruption and political intrigues of 1900s New York. We’ll meet Tweed and other party bosses, government bureaucrats, captains of industry, and diligent journalists. We’ll learn how they fought to gain power and see the buildings they built to prove their power's worth.
