Summary
Lefferts Manor was founded by James Lefferts in the 1890s with strict covenants requiring single-family homes of brick or stone, uniform setbacks, and no commercial or multi-family buildings. These rules shaped the neighborhood’s cohesive character and led to a rich array of early 20th-century styles, including Romanesque Revival, neo-Renaissance, Colonial Revival, neo-Tudor, and neo-Medieval.
The walking tour visits a number of blocks in the Lefferts Manor Historic District, as well as a few adjacent blocks of historic homes and buildings, allowing for an interesting comparison of the varied yet cohesive early 20th century architectural styles present throughout the area.
