Summary
[In-person tour] Stroll around one of New York City’s most quietly glamorous neighborhoods. With historic preservationist James Russiello, explore Gramercy—a quintessentially New York name built around a distinctly English idea: a private gated park conceived in the ambitious 1830s (think Rockefeller Center… just a century earlier). Trace the remarkable evolution of the land--owned by individuals as diverse as being formerly enslaved, the director general of New Amsterdam, and a New York City mayor--as it developed into one of the city’s most fashionable addresses. Learn how restrictive covenants shaped an elite enclave of Greek Revival and Italianate style townhouses—and why the city’s power brokers, artists, actors, writers, politicians, and industrialists all wanted in. Today preserved among the earliest historic districts, the area features remarkable houses of worship, institutional buildings, and social clubhouses in removelded residences by architects James Renwick Jr., Calvert Vaux, and Stanford White. Elegant, storied, and full of surprises—Gramercy rewards those who know where to look, though please note the tour will not enter the park.
