Summary
[Virtual tour] Drawn by its untouched natural beauty in proximity to NYC, American painters started moving to Long Island's East Hampton during the late 19th century, with Winslow Homer, Thomas Moran and Impressionist Childe Hassam taking the lead, focusing on painting outdoors, capturing nature as well as modern life unfolding. WWII brought a new wave of Surrealist artists to East Hampton, with the help of Sara & Gerald Murphy and Peggy Guggenheim: Fernand Léger, Max Ernst, Frederick Kiesler, Matta, Wilfredo Lam. It was Peggy Guggenheim who was also instrumental in helping Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner move here, establishing ‘The Springs’ as a mecca for Abstract Expressionists, including the De Koonings and Alfonso Ossorio. Join art historian Sylvia Luadien-Meo for this virtual tour.
