Summary

In Spanish, "jibaro" means hick or country bumpkin. But in Puerto Rico the term is used affectionately, connoting a loyalty to the land and culture. In New York City in the 1950’s mass migration from the island, activists formed political party clubhouses, social and cultural organizations and organized campaigns for housing, healthcare education opportunities under the banner of The New Jibaros — the New York Puerto Rican identities being formed by these struggles for progress. By the early 1980s Puerto Ricans who had gained a foothold were facing gentrification and displacement from the area known as Alphabet City. How the streets once known as Avenue “C” became Loisaida Avenue is the theme linking the 6 stops of a ten block tour that starts in front of The Nuyorican Cafe on East 3rd St. and ends at Loisaida, Inc. On 9th St.
