Summary

The stories of Chelsea women run the spectrum from tales of pioneers of women's right and African-American freedom to visions of modern architecture along the High Line. This story-rich walking tour connects the dots between Chelsea's early suffragists, and today's outspoken women, interpreting the neighborhood as a laboratory for social experiment. Significant points include the home of Abby Hopper Gibbons who was at the center of the underground railroad movement and abolitionism as well as the cause of women's sufferage, the former New York Women's Liberation Center, now a center for training women in construction and nontraditional careers, the former Bayview Correctional Facility which is to become a major center of women's organizations, homes of such poets as Elisabeth Bishop and Elsa Gidlow, architect Zaha Hadid's latest curvilinear confection on the High Line and locations of lesbian hotspots and organizations of the early LGBTQ coming out era. Time permitting this tour for Women's History Month will visit all the above and more.
