Summary

The community garden movement of the 1970’s took root in the Lower East Side and, to this day, LES and the East Village have the largest concentration of community gardens in the United States. These are spaces where neighbors build community, grow food, and compost food scraps into nutrient-rich organic matter to feed our soils.

Join the LES Ecology Center for an in-person guided walk to explore local garden sites and learn how these spaces were born through community members resisting the neglect of abandoned spaces and beautifying their neighborhood. We will meet at the LES Ecology Center Garden at 210 East 7th Street between Avenues B and C. After exploring the site, we will go for a short walk around the neighborhood visiting 1 or 2 additional gardens and ending at the Tompkins Square Greenmarket. Participants should bring comfortable walking shoes, water, and sunscreen.

This event also kicks off International Compost Awareness Week, a global celebration of composting!
