Summary

Join the author of “Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Forgotten Past” Geoffrey Cobb on a women’s history walking tour of Greenpoint. In the 19th century Greenpoint was the industrial heart of Brooklyn and women toiled in many local factories. We will visit factories employing mostly women including the Eberhardt Pencil Factory, the American Hemp Rope Manufacturing Company and Levition. These factories were also the scenes of sometimes violent strikes where women. We will also visit the former Greenpoint Home for Indigent women and discuss the plight of impoverished females. We will visit the site of a former Vaudeville theater and discuss locally born feminist Mae West, and how theater transformed gender roles for her and other local women in early twentieth century Brooklyn.
