Summary
[In-person tour] The flower district has faded, but many fascinating architectural gems survive. Join Matt Postal for a walk through the West 20s (and 30th Street), viewing one of Manhattan's earliest surviving public schools (1854), the row houses that became Tin Pan Alley, and a castle-like Tenderloin-era police precinct by R. Thomas Short. Particular attention will be paid to 20th century buildings associated with the "needle trades," such as a loft building called Fox Hall, the Lefcourt Clothing Center, a WPA school with display windows and surrealist mosaics, and the still-evolving campus of the Fashion Institute of Technology, containing an intriguing mix of mid-century modern designs, as well as a new academic building by ShoP Architects.
