Summary

The years straddling the storied 1920s Harlem Renaissance revealed women engaged in astonishingly diverse vocations, ambitions and flights of novel pluck. Join Columbia Community Scholar Eric K. Washington on a Central Harlem tour that highlights a number of these women-from flappers to pharmacists-many of whom populate the pages of his new book, "Boss of the Grips," about a once influential Harlem-based labor and cultural figure. Waypoints include such sites associated with figures who made remarkable strides in such varied fields as theater and music, civic activism, beauty culture, fashion design, business enterprise, arts and letters, politics and philanthropy.
