Summary

Architect Cass Gilbert has received accolades as the father of the modern skyline for skyscrapers like the Woolworth Building. However, his commercial and industrial work, much of which still exists in working order, is nearly a footnote in his portfolio. Go beyond the Woolworth Building and explore his significant contribution to New York City's working waterfront in the form of the behemoth Brooklyn Army Terminal, designed for troop and goods movement during World War I; Williamsburg's imposing Austin, Nichols & Company Warehouse, a towering monument to early 20th century manufacturing technology; and the understated R.C. Williams Warehouse along Manhattan's west side, best seen from the High Line, which marks its original working entrance. Architectural historian Melanie Macchio will share insight into the history of the buildings as well as the surrounding industrial and residential neighborhoods that inspired their locations.
