Summary
Walk through the rooms and halls of the famed Steinway Mansion. Experience the interior of this landmarked home as well as its recent past.
Built in (1858) on a hill top overlooking Bowery Bay, in the Astoria neighborhood of Long Island City, it was one of the first NYC Designated Landmarks approved by the Landmark Commission.
As the home of the Steinway Family, (from 1870 to about 1915), it was the setting for far reaching ideas that sparked our city’s growth, development, and position as the world’s cultural and intellectual capital.
Subsequently sold to the Halberian Family who considered making it into a restaurant / night club. Now owned by developers who, with LPC Commission approval, built warehouses on its surrounding property.
The house once boasted community events is now closed to the public. A Virtual Tour.
