Summary

This walk will explore locations in west SoHo and along the Hudson River Greenway on the theme of what New York City welcomes -- and sends away. The architecturally significant DSNY Spring Street Garage will be our starting point for a tour that touches on garbage, transportation infrastructure and New York as port city of refuge and refuse. Your leaders will be two graduate students whose inspiration for this walk comes from a class called Garbage in Gotham, taught by NYU professor and DSNY anthropologist-in-residence Robin Nagle. Join us to contemplate the ebbs and flows of New York’s waterways, streets and tunnels, and the people and goods they ferry. We’ll walk for about a mile or so and end with a pint at the Ear Inn on Spring Street, one of New York’s oldest bars and erstwhile haunt of the garbage- and longshore-men of yore.
