[In-person tour] This walk with architectural historian Matt Postal examines the Upper East Side in all its variety, from the finest tree-lined blocks adjoining Central Park to First Avenue. After viewing memorable mansions and elite clubs, we head east, inspecting humble carriage houses once occupied by horses, grooms and chauffeurs, modest brownstones built for middle-class residents in the Treadwell Farm Historic District, and the First Avenue Estate, an innovative housing complex built by early 20th century philanthropists for the "working poor." The impact of public transit will be discussed, as well as how these blocks have changed over the past century.
