Shirley Chisholm's Crown Heights North Walking Tour
06/24/2023 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM ET
[In-person tour] Shirley Chisholm's slogan "Unbossed and Unbought," was the rallying cry of a new force in American politics – the African American woman. She was the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968, and the first to mount a serious and substantial run for the presidency in 1972. Aside from a few years as a child in Barbados, Shirley was born, educated and lived her life in Brooklyn. Crown Heights North was her home, her district in Congress, and the place where she launched her campaigns. This tour with Suzanne Spellen will take you to family homes and other locations that were important to her story. We'll also see other important points of interest in the neighborhood, highlighting the architectural and historic significance of Crown Heights North, and its importance to the various communities that have called it home for almost two centuries.
